Budapest was voted No. 1 in Europe for 2019 among the 20 finalists on the list. All competing for the coveted title of the best European destinations, awarded by European Best Destinations (EBD).
For its tenth edition, the contest garnered a record of over 500,000 votes for Europe’s most fashionable destinations. They will be promoted throughout the year to millions of travelers. These cities will be allowed to carry the title « Best European destination » in their marketing.
Braga – Portugal
This year, the list has many winners. Not surprisingly Athens, Florence and Paris, but also more surprising choices such as Braga (Portugal), Bratislava (Slovakia), Dinan (Belgium), Poznan (Poland), Cavtat (Croatia), Kotor (Montenegro), as well as the first sustainable tourism destination to appear on the list, Monte Isola in Italy, which took third place.

EBD is based in Brussels and promotes the continent as the best destination in the world, while rewarding and highlighting the most visited places.
In cooperation with the European Commission to promote sustainable tourism, the EBD organizes some of Europe’s leading tourism competitions, including the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe, the most beautiful beaches in Europe, the best romantic destinations and the best best European ski resorts.
Poznan – Poland
Every year, the results of the competitions translate into « a significant increase in the number of tourists for the awarded destinations, » according to the EBD press release. « With tourism growth of 16% for Porto rewarded in 2017, 13% for Bordeaux rewarded in 2015, 25% for Zadar rewarded in 2016 and 11% for Wroclaw who won the title of best European destination in 2018. »
Among the highlights of this year’s results, the organizers mentioned that « for the first time since the creation of this ranking, a sustainable tourism destination has been ranked among the top three destinations to visit in Europe. Metz has been ranked as one of the most creative and dynamic cities in the country. Braga in Portugal, which comes third, offers the best quality of life in the country. »
Metz – France
« The 15 destinations with the most votes will be presented to millions of travelers as the most popular destinations in 2019 and will feature on the Best European Destinations website. It is Europe’s most visited tourism site, reaching more than 5.5 million travelers, « according to EBD.
